River Star Homes Visit Future Oyster Reef
Last spring, RiverFest on the Lafayette raised almost $20,000 for a new oyster reef that Elizabeth River Project plans to construct to help restore the Lafayette branch of the Elizabeth. On Saturday, Aug. 14, River Star Homes turned out to paddle to the site with our biologist Joe Rieger. After the visit, many of the paddlers assembled their own "oyster floats" for river restoration projects at home.

About 35 paddlers turned out to tour the proposed oyster reef, between Willow Wood and Granby Street bridges. Biologist Rieger explained how to reduce bacteria that currently make oysters unsafe for eating. He also explained the chain reaction that can lead from excess fertilizer on your yard, to the "red tide" algal bloom now in the Lafayette - and potential fish kills.

Contact Cheryl Copper, ccopper@elizabethriver.org, 399-7487, if you are interested in growing oysters on your dock for future placement on the Lafayette reef - or if you would like to be one of the first 100 homes to commit to reduce your fertilizer use by half - with our help!

Many thanks to Dan Jones with the City of Norfolk for donating use of City kayaks for Saturday's fun!
