Big Grant helps Lafayette via River Star Homes
Needham family River Star HomesThe Lafayette branch of the Elizabeth River will benefit from a $301,900 federal grant to The Elizabeth River Project to expand our River Star Homes.

The National Fish & Wildlife Foundation on Oct. 5 announced a large federal grant to Elizabeth River Project for eliminating massive algal blooms in the Lafayette branch of the Elizabeth by using our new program, River Star Homes, to engage citizens in on-the-ground projects and behavior changes.

"The grant is a huge step in the right direction toward our goal to make the Lafayette branch safe for swimming and fishing by 2014," said Marjorie Mayfield Jackson, Executive Director, Elizabeth River Project. Funds will be used to provide free technical assistance, yard flags and help with costs of on-the-ground projects such as rain barrels, rain gardens, lawn makeovers to reduce fertilizer use, native landscaping and more.

The grant will also help expand our companion River Star programs for businesses and schools.
