Job Opening: Development Director Summary: The Elizabeth River Project, one of Virginia's fastest-growing non-profits, seeks a Director of Development to manage our annual campaign, membership program and an upcoming capital campaign for environmental restoration of the Elizabeth River. We're offering a competitive salary, benefits and the reward of making a difference. What we're looking for: The successful candidate will be organized, people-oriented, persistent, enthusiastic and proven with achieving ambitious goals through focus, commitment and the ability to motivate others. While non-profit fundraising experience is a strong plus, we’re also looking for fundraising aptitude and experience in related fields and may be willing to train the right candidate. Fundraising needs: Our operating budget exceeds $1 million each year, including more than $350,000 raised from the community through direct-mail membership drive ($135,000) and an annual campaign ($215,000). An upcoming Capital Campaign will raise up to $3 million for Paradise Creek Nature Park with the help of a fundraising consultant. A new annual fundraising event, Riverfest, is planned for September 2008. Responsibilities: The Development Director's top priority is cultivating major donors and fundraising volunteers to meet annual fundraising goals and to sustain long-term, productive relationships for the benefit of the Elizabeth River. The successful candidate will also oversee direct-mail efforts including the membership drive, as well as Capital Campaigns and fundraising events, and provide planning, budget management and program leadership including supervision of Executive and Development Associate. What you don't have to do: A full-time Executive and Development Associate provides administrative and clerical support to fundraising efforts including data base management. Other project managers and Executive Director apply for most grants (not generally the responsibility of the Development Director). A consultant will plan and guide the Capital Campaign. To apply: Send a cover letter, your resume outlining related experience and training, plus three professional references to Marjorie Mayfield Jackson, Executive Director, Elizabeth River Project, 475 Water St/C-103A, Portsmouth, VA 23704 (no calls please!).
