This scrap metal yard in Chesapeake is
implementing a new plan to reduce runoff to the river at Money Point, a
priority cleanup area for the Elizabeth River Project.
To reduce the potential for runoff of soils
bound with metals, the yard has relocated high volume traffic to paved
roadways, paved operating areas and relocated some operations. SIMS also
placed straw bales along the shoreline to help filter sheet flow to the
river. Upgrades to a stormwater pollution prevention plan included
increased attention to housekeeping, dust control, sweeping, and
increased maintenance of drain inlets. The yard, which recycles more
than 222,000 tons of steel each year, previously completed a habitat
restoration project.
