This new port terminal is
setting world-class standards for it’s efficiency and environmental
stewardship.
A combination of
precedent-setting mitigation, aggressive stormwater controls, a new
standard for operating efficiency and a pro-active commitment make APM
Terminals Virginia a welcome win-win for the environment and the economy
on the Elizabeth River waterfront.
The 576-acre port
terminal in Portsmouth, opened in fall 2007, is raising the bar for the
world on operating efficiencies that reduce pollution while improving
the bottom line. All six ship-to-shore cranes and all 30 rail-mounted
gantries are electric, helping reduce air emissions by 60 tons per year.
State-of-the-art automation reduces truck queue and idle times. All 62
off-road vehicles meet emission standards for on-road vehicles. The
stormwater system slopes the 291 paved acres, oil-water separators and
other treatments that give the environmental manager such faith, he
drank a cup of stormwater at his last inspection. Meanwhile, a $5.3
million payment to Living River Restoration Trust for sediment cleanup
and oyster reefs set a national precedent for mitigating large dredging
impacts. On site, 110 acres of forest and non-tidal wetlands are in
permanent conservation. |
