A Bold New Vision for 2020
Action Team 2008 Proposes Bold New Vision for Elizabeth River
Our home river can be fishable and swimmable again, with action steps outlined in a draft new Watershed Action Plan prepared by The Elizabeth River Project’s Watershed Action Team 2008 in cooperation with Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

The Action Team prepared the plan over the last six months and reviewed a first draft at a summit on April 30 and May 1 at Norfolk Botanical Gardens.

The final plan will be made public in the fall. A new waterfront event, RiverFest, on September 27 will celebrate “the River of the Future” to be outlined in the plan with roles for everyone, from individuals to government and industry.

The team’s draft vision statement: “Our legacy will be a clean river that is safe for fishing and swimming, teeming with wildlife; while sustaining a thriving economy, so that our children and grandchildren will know that we have them in mind.” Seven actions will be outlined for how to achieve this vision.

Meanwhile, a Green Team of gifted third-graders shadowed the 100-member Watershed Action Team all year and made their own contribution to the new plan: The recommendation of the river otter as the new “poster species” to track river health.
