Harborfest 2010 Helps Focus on River Restoration with The Learning Barge
More than 1,500 people visited the Learning Barge over the three days of Harborfest 2010! The Elizabeth River Project's award-winning educational vessel was moored at the premiere location of Otter Berth, next to Waterside.
"Each hour, on the hour, our educators gave tours of the six Learning Stations that help illustrate how to make the Elizabeth River a fishable, swimmable urban river by 2020," said Marjorie Mayfield Jackson, executive director of the Elizabeth River Project. The Learning Barge experience has already garnered rave reviews from thousands of students and their teachers.
Friday evening, The Learning Barge hosted a private reception for visiting national media. Top donors were hosted at another reception on Saturday night, during the spectacular fireworks display.
"Special thanks to Wilbanks, Smith & Thomas for sponsoring us at Harborfest and to Festevents for giving the vessel such great visibility," said Mayfield Jackson. "For a long time I have wished that Harborfest not only celebrated the river, but acknowledged her restoration needs. Having the Learning Barge front and center for this year's festival really achieved that in a big way. Plus - we were totally thrilled to be have front row seats for the best fireworks ever!"
