Money Point's Toxic Goo Removal on "Go"
The Elizabeth River Project plans to break ground this summer for the first phase of a major cleanup of toxic contamination at Money Point. The Virginia Marine Resources Commission on March 24 became the last agency to provide the necessary permits for the $1.2 million, Phase 1 project at Money Point, to be complemented by a $300,000 wetland restoration on adjacent property at Elizabeth River Terminals.
PAH contamination at the site, recorded at some of the highest levels of any waterway in the world, is correlated with cancer in bottom-dwelling fish. Special thanks to the Living River Restoration Trust, APM Terminals Virginia, US Army Corps of Engineers, VA Department of Environmental Quality, US EPA, City of Chesapeake, Elizabeth River Terminals, NOAA and many other partners.
