When you sign up to be a River Star Home with Elizabeth River
Project, one of the
seven simple things you agree to is: Reduce the amount of fertilizer
you use on your yard, since it can wash into the river with the rain and
lead to algal blooms. But what if you don't take care of your lawn
yourself, and instead hire a landscape company?
Fortunately, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation
(DCR) has established a program in which lawn care operators voluntarily
agree to abide by "best management practices" that DCR believes will
protect our waters from excess fertilizers. The Hampton Roads companies
listed below have agreed to follow DCR's guidelines for proper lawn
fertilization practices. The agreement addresses the amount, placement,
timing, and application of nutrient containing materials, such as
fertilizer. The company also agrees to employee training.
While we're sure there are other companies who do the right thing, and
just have not got around to the state's certification program, this is a
good place to start in your efforts to make sure your yard care is truly
"green."
