are best suited for intimate audiences, but
can be adapted. Princess Elizabeth will wear a new historical costume from
The Shakespeare Theater and arrive with artifacts and resources. A treasure
box of children’s environmental books is also available including pre- and
post activities. |

River History
(PreK-12) |
Learn
about the river’s past, present and future through the presentation
Elizabeth 2007. Princess Elizabeth will tell you the story of one
of American’s great ports reclaiming its heritage as a living
ecosystem. It’s all part of a larger new education initiative by The
Elizabeth River Project to commemorate the 400th anniversary of
Captain John Smith’s discovery of the Elizabeth River in 1607. Discover YOUR
home river and be part of the legend. |

Habitats
(Grades
PreK-7) |
|
The Elizabeth is known as one of the most polluted river’s on
the Chesapeake Bay and wildlife is dependent on healthy habitats for
survival. Learn about the river’s wildlife, ecology and ecosystems as
Princess Elizabeth tells the story “A River of Hope”. Students will
compare a healthy river to today’s river noting challenges and solutions to
her pollution. |

Wetlands
(Grades
2-7) |
|
Were
you aware that the Elizabeth River has lost over 50% of her wetlands and for
miles her shore has been hardened and are void of trees and native plants?
Join Princess Elizabeth as she tells the story Spartina”, and learn
the function, benefits and value of wetlands. Students will meet
English explorer Captain John Smith and a modern day boy and compare how the
river has changed over time. |

Stewardship
(Grades 2-8) |
|
Invite Princess Elizabeth to tell her story of how she became
an environmental steward passionate about her home river. Teachers will be
provided a copy of the youth workbook, “A Royal Steward,” which she
authored to inspire students to join her and take action. The workbook
offers post visit reflection activities and resources to engage students in
group discussions and foster environmental stewardship. Activities are also
provided for students to earn a River Steward patch from The Elizabeth River
Project. |

The Port
(Grade
3-5) |
Discover
the Elizabeth River, a major world port and living ecosystem as Princess
Elizabeth will lead students back in time to
The Port of Virginia
~1607-2007.
Sail down the Elizabeth when the first settlers hoped to find a world port
and discovered a bountiful harbor with tall pine and fir trees, mounds of
oysters and an abundance of fish. Join her as she tells the story of
America’s first port with artifacts and maps from her treasure box.
Students will also explore a living river with a fragile ecosystem in need
of River Stewards. |

Curriculum
(Grades K-8) |
|
Schedule a field trip to The Elizabeth River Project’s River
Information Center located in Olde Towne Portsmouth. Princess Elizabeth will
tailor K-8, SOL, river specific activities to accommodate your group.
(Groups of 25 are less recommended) The center is open M-F, 10-4. Some
activities can be implemented at your facility or during an off-site field
trip also such as a park by the river. Contact the princess for details. |
