Wetlands in the Classroom
An Innovative Program |

Seeking
10 schools
(5-7th grade) in the
Elizabeth River watershed
and 10 schools
(5-7th grade) in the
Lynnhaven watershed
to participate in an education initiative to grow the native marsh grass,
Spartina alterniflora, in a classroom setting beginning January 2008. |

Teachers will be trained and
provided supplies, SOL curriculum and instructions.

Students will raise Spartina
alterniflora plants
to grow for approximately twelve weeks in spring 2008.

SOL curriculum will include:
supplies, data collection methods, botany principles, plant development
information and supplies.

Education initiative
will be presented to students by Princess Elizabeth, The
Elizabeth River Project’s key educator, through a theatrical original
story, “Spartina” highlighting the importance of native marsh grasses to
our rivers.

Students and volunteers will place the
marsh grasses on restored wetlands along the Elizabeth and
Lynnhaven river during spring 2008. (Each school will be responsible for
planning and running the transplanting fieldtrips in their respective
rivers)
