Boosts Restoration with $60,000 Grant |
| |
|
The restoration of the Elizabeth River has
received a substantial boost from Dominion Foundation, the charitable arm of
Dominion Virginia Power. The Elizabeth River Project was granted the funds
to help with the Money Point cleanup as well
as promote industrial stewardship, educate school children and help
establish Paradise Creek Nature Park.
"This is one of the largest donations we have ever received from a regional
foundation," said Elizabeth River Project Executive Director Marjorie
Mayfield Jackson. "We are tremendously excited about the restoration
progress this will make possible."
The grant will help: |
|
|
-
Expand the Elizabeth River Project's River Stars program, which assists
industries with achieving voluntary pollution prevention by recruiting
15 new facilities into the program over three years and documenting the
addition of at least 75 acres of urban wildlife habitat and at least
750,000 pounds of pollution reduced;
-
Grow The Elizabeth River
Project's River Star Schools program from 65 to 75 schools or half of
all K-12 schools in the watershed and reach at least 12,000 students.
-
Complete final
engineering to clean up 19 acres of toxic sediment on the river bottom
at Money Point, one of the worst areas of the Chesapeake Bay.
-
Prepare a final design
and achieve initial habitat restoration for a one-of-a-kind regional
nature park, the 40-acre proposed Paradise Creek Nature Park, a
partnership with the City of Portsmouth. The park will provide rare
access to the Elizabeth River with 10 acres of restored wetlands, a
canoe and kayak launch and educational partnerships with area schools
