Free for any facility in the Elizabeth River
watershed, the River Stars program is most successful where it can make the
most difference–with facilities that have large opportunities to reduce
toxic pollution and/or restore and conserve urban wildlife habitat.
River Stars can be churches, major shipyards
or Fortune 500s. Together they are restoring vital wetlands for our fish,
urban forests to filter pollution on the shore and oyster reefs to bring
back the native oyster. They’re inventing new ways to reduce or prevent
pollution and treat stormwater runoff. In return, they routinely discover
cost savings, reduced liability, improved worker safety and morale. Their
efforts have earned international acclaim as one of the most successful
programs anywhere for inspiring voluntary stewardship.
The River Stars program is so successful that
it has garnered international attention. Delegations from China, Mexico,
Bosnia, the Philippines, and Thailand have studied the River Stars program
as a model for their own efforts to begin similar programs. |
